Steve Head, 6-1, 220 lbs. offensive guard, was a devastating blocker on end sweeps and options. He led Kutztown ball carriers to over 5,500 yards rushing in his three years.
Â
Head was a First Team All-Pennsylvania Conference choice for three years running. He was a two-time All-ECAC selection and a First Team All-American by the AFCA and the Associated Press in 1977. He was co-captain in 1977, a fine leader, and an excellent student.
Â
After his playing days at KU, Head was an assistant coach for KU's junior varsity team in 1978, and the varsity offensive line coach in 1979.
Â
Head was signed to the Philadelphia Eagles as a free agent in 1978 and to the New York Jets in 1979. He was the third member of the Golden Bears to ink a pro contract as a free agent since 1974 when Doug Dennison went to the Dallas Cowboys.Â
