ABOUT KUTZTOWN STRENGTH & CONDITIONING

Vision Statement
To continually strive to find the competitive edge to optimize performance and win in PSAC and NCAA DII sport.

Mission Statement
  • Win conference and national championships.
  • Build a high-performance environment and a winning team culture whilst providing an outstanding student-athlete experience.
  • To be known as a center for athletic excellence.
  • Develop student-athletes for their future and improve their quality of life for their present.

The overall priority of the sports performance program is to improve performance on the student-athletes field of play and to keep them physically and mentally healthy with the aim of winning a national championship in their respective sport.

We achieve this goal through a thorough, evidence-based approach to our training regimen. It's critical for us to stay current with the latest training advancements, helping the student-athletes reach their ultimate performance. Furthermore, collaboration is part of our ethos. We work collectively in a multi-disciplinary team to establish the safest and most effective training environment for the student-athletes.

Our strength and conditioning coaching philosophy is based upon the following pillars:

Championship Culture
Creating a team culture that focuses on achieving the ultimate goal - winning championships - is vital. This culture must be fostered by the team, under the guidance of myself and other coaches, by establishing and maintaining high standards, ensuring accountability, and demonstrating strong leadership that empowers others. It is critical that every team member understands the shared vision, mission, values, and expectations. Regular reinforcement fosters trust and promotes buy-in from all members. We firmly believe that we can nurture this championship culture by encouraging competition in every aspect of our activities, such as lifts, speed
development, conditioning, and recovery.

By promoting upbeat competition, we can enhance psychological preparedness, which is crucial in high-stress championship games. The aim is for our athletes to enter these situations feeling prepared and composed, thanks to prior practice and training designed to replicate match conditions.

Complete Student-Athlete
As collegiate strength and conditioning coaches, our job revolves around the comprehensive development of student-athletes, balancing their roles as students and athletes equally. We aim to cultivate comprehensive athleticism, psychological resilience, and injury resistance for optimal sports performance. Concurrently, we work on promoting academic accomplishment and personal growth through virtues such as integrity, respect, and morality.

Our goal in the strength and conditioning department is to nurture independent athletes, instilling in them an understanding of their training program - what they're doing, how to do it, and most crucially, why they're doing it. This understanding and self-sufficiency prepares them to thrive in their post-graduation sporting careers. Student-athletes, in our perspective, should also be students of their chosen sport, just as much as their academic major. Therefore, our goal is to motivate athletes to not only excel in the weight room and on the field but become experts, or 'PhDs', in their sport.

Integrated Model
We are convinced that a collaborative and integrated approach is essential. This model involves team members, each possessing unique skills, working together to achieve a shared objective. Clear and regular communication, along with feedback from our entire coaching and performance team, is a fundamental part of this process. We advocate for a strategy that places the athlete at its core, championed by coaches, and built on a solid foundation of scientific evidence and data. Every action we take aims to boost the athlete's performance and welfare. Our coaches are responsible for developing and implementing the strategy, always adhering to evidence-based practices.

Train for Performance
Training athletes: Our primary focus

Our mission while coaching athletes is to enhance their performance in their respective sports, with on-field performance being the ultimate determinant of success. Our every effort goes towards equipping the athletes for their on-field encounters, with each approach backed by a solid physiological or biomechanical foundation.

We prioritize:
  • The quality of movements over the volume of training loads.
  • Achieving measurable improvements in performance abilities required by the sport.
  • Optimizing the training program for each individual athlete.

We understand that maintaining consistent playtime is crucial. Hence, we take all necessary measures to minimize the risk of non-contact injuries (‘the best ability is availability’).

Both strength training (in the weight room) and field-based training (speed development, agility/change of direction, conditioning) receive equal attention. Furthermore, we do not adhere to any particular exercise, model, or method rigidly. The selected strategy is entirely dependent on the specific circumstances, athletes, and the training environment.

Finally, it’s essential that everything is built on a foundation of physical and mental health and well-being.
