Ken Meyer (1971-86) coached in various capacities at Kutztown University from 1971-86, and was an assistant professor in KU’s Department of Health, Physical Education and Dance. He achieved his greatest success as head men’s track and field coach from 1978-86. During that period, Meyer broke a 55-year drought by leading KU to its first PSAC title in the history of the sport. At the time, it was just the third PSAC title in the history of the school, and the first for men’s athletics since 1966. For his effort, Meyer was named 1983 PSAC Men’s Track & Field Coach of the Year. Meyer coached several of the top athletes in school history, including six All-Americans and five members of the KU Athletic Hall of Fame. Meyer led KU to second-place finishes in the PSAC in 1982 and 1984 and was named 1982 NCAA Division II Mid-Atlantic Region Track Coach of the Year. Meyer also coached the KU women’s track team from 1985-86. He was men’s cross country coach from 1974-83, after the sport was permanently reinstated at the varsity level. He was Kutztown’s head men’s basketball coach from 1971-74, and assisted with the track and basketball programs between 1975 and 1978. Prior to KU, Meyer had coaching stints at William Paterson College (1965-71) and University School in Shaker Heights, OH. Meyer was involved with countless committees and special activities during his career. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Springfield College in 1960, and received a master’s degree from Western Reserve University in 1964. Meyer passed away May 8, 1991, after a battle with cancer.
