Russell Stoudt

Russell Stoudt was a standout athlete for three KU teams, known during his era as the Golden avalanche. He played quarterback for the football team, guard for the basketball team and shortstop for the baseball team. He was captain of the football and baseball teams his senior year and captain of the basketball team his junior and senior years. He led the football team to a 4-2-1 record his senior year and led the basketball team to the Pennsylvania State Teacher’s College Championships in 1936. He graduated in 1937 with a bachelor’s degree in secondary education and went on to a teaching and coaching career. His longest stint was at a nearby Northwestern Lehigh High School where he began the football program and coached basketball for 13 years. His 1964 cagers captured the District 11 Championship. Stoudt died in 1978, the same year he retired. The Stoudt Scholar Athlete Award, named in his honor, is presented every year to the top all-around athletes in the Northwestern Lehigh School District.
