Golden Bears sweep Millersville on Senior Day

KUTZTOWN, PA (April 23, 2010) - The Kutztown University baseball team kept pace among the top of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division standings after sweeping Millersville, 8-4 and 21-1, on Friday afternoon at North Campus Field. (Game 1 box) (Game 2 box)

The Golden Bears improved to 34-9 overall and 16-6 in the PSAC East, sharing identical records with West Chester who swept Shippensburg on Friday. The Golden Bears can clinch the PSAC East regular season title with a sweep at Millersville on Saturday. The Marauders fell to 9-13 in the PSAC East and trail East Stroudsburg by one game for the final playoff spot.

In between games, the Golden Bears honored their seven seniors. As the PA announcer read through their long list of accomplishments, the gang received standing ovations from onlookers and teammates. (Senior Day photo gallery)

In the opener, Shayne Houck ripped a two-run home run in the first inning to put KU up 2-1. The Golden Bears built a six run cushion with a four-run fourth inning, all coming with two outs. Senior Matt Kulbacki smacked a homer to right field to score Mike Dugan and James Quigley.

After the Marauders cut the lead to 7-4, Brett Wigder ended the comeback bid with a homer to leftfield, the first of his collegiate career.

Jonathan Grosse picked up his sixth win of the season. He surrendered just four hits, gave up four runs - only one earned - and struck out five. Senior Adam Maini worked a perfect seventh, striking out all three batters he faced.

In the nightcap,
Mike Kacelowicz, Jared Frey and Houck had three-straight singles to start the first inning. Quigley was hit by a pitch, followed by RBI singles from Dugan and Jeff Kistle.

In all, t
he Golden Bears scored multiple runs in five of their six innings. They scored six runs in each the first and sixth inning, two in the second, three in the third and four in the fourth.

The Marauders threatened in the third inning when the first two batters reached base. However, a line drive to Frey led to an inning ending triple play. Frey took one step to his left to snatch the ball out of the air and raced to first and recorded the second out. He then fired a perfect strike to Kacelowicz at second to complete the trifecta.

"I had never been a part of a triple play before," said Frey. "It was really cool to be a part of something like that. I was at the right place and saw the runner on first was far enough to get the double. I heard everyone yell 'second', so I turned and made the throw."

Tyler Persun had a dominant performance on the pitcher's mound. He allowed just one run and struck out four. Tom Neely worked a near-perfect sixth, issuing a walk and striking out two. Senior Mike Bucklin finished off the marathon with two fly outs and a strike out.

Dugan finished with a game-high four RBIs, while Gilbert Vega and Matt Albaugh each had three runs batted in. Todd Rubendall was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Damien Ruiz went 2-for-3 and plated two.

Pitcher's Ryan Cassidy and Nathan Reed were also honored for Senior Day, but it was not their turn in the rotation to pitch.

The Golden Bears doubleheader with the Marauders will begin at noon on Millersville University Field.
