Women's tennis tops Molloy on Senior Day

KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Kutztown University women's tennis enjoyed a successful Senior Day with a 7-0 non-conference victory over Molloy on Saturday afternoon at the Keystone Courts.

With the visiting Lions carrying just five players on the trip down from New York, Kutztown collected wins by default at third doubles and sixth singles.

The Golden Bears (5-9) answered Molloy's 6-2 win at first doubles with a 6-2 win of their own from Emma Semery (Fuveau, France/HDN Academy) and Ximena Bolanos (Mineral de la Reforma, Mexico/Colegio Makarenko) against Alice Fartushynska and Ashley Bonilla at No. 2 to take a 1-0 lead into singles play.

Senior Jenna Ferretti (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) drew into the lineup and won fifth singles in style with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Taylor Gunnip that put the Maroon and Gold ahead 3-0. Bieke Roovers (Leiden, Netherlands/Leonardo College) clinched the match for KU with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Fartushynska at No. 2. It was Roovers' 10th singles win of the season, making her the second player to reach double-digit singles victories this season.

Ryleigh Bohning (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) got her second singles win of the year, 7-5, 6-2, over Bonilla at No. 4 and Semery put away Erin Sanchez in the top flight match after a good first set battle, 7-5, 6-1.

Isabela de Nadai (Vitoria, Brazil/St. Paul's School) went to a first set tiebreaker with Elena Baughman Saunders at No. 3 before earning a straight set victory, 7-6 (4), 6-4, to secure the shutout win for the hosts.

Semery and Ferretti were honored for their time at KU with a small on-court ceremony.

The Golden Bears will close out the regular season with a pair of PSAC East matches next week. KU hosts West Chester on Wednesday, April 23, at 2 p.m., before making up a rescheduled match at East Stroudsburg on Friday, April 25, at 4:30 p.m.
