KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Sophomore
Bieke Roovers (Leiden, Netherlands/Leonardo College) collected victories at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles but visiting West Chester slipped past the Kutztown University women's tennis team, 5-2, Wednesday afternoon at the Keystone Courts.
The Golden Rams and Golden Bears traded wins in doubles before West Chester (5-13, 1-3 PSAC East) claimed the deciding match, 7-5, at No. 2 to take a 1-0 lead.
Kutztown (5-10, 2-3 PSAC East) won first doubles behind Roovers, the reigning PSAC East Freshman of the Year, and
Isabela de Nadai (Vitoria, Brazil/St. Paul's School), 6-3, over Delaney Tingle and Alexandra Cave.
Straight set wins at No. 6 and No. 5 singles carried WCU within a point of the match victory before
Ximena Bolanos (Mineral de la Reforma, Mexico/Colegio Makarenko) topped Gabriella Lerario 6-4, 6-4, at No. 4 to keep KU alive.
Regionally ranked No. 18 Tingle put the match away for the Golden Rams with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over
Emma Semery (Fuveau, France/HDN Academy) at No. 1.
Roovers was last to finish, earning her 11th singles win of the year (11-5) with a 3-6, 7-5, 10-7 come-from-behind decision over Ashleigh Grooms in a super tiebreaker at No. 2.
"West Chester is one of the traditionally stronger programs in the PSAC East and we gave them everything they could handle today," said head coach
Pete Smith. "I'm proud of my team, that was a really good effort. There is still work to be done but we're moving in the right direction."
Kutztown will travel to East Stroudsburg for a 4:30 p.m. match on Friday to close out the 2024-25 season.
