KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- The Kutztown University women's soccer team bounced back in a big way, downing Millersville 2-0 in a PSAC East game at Pucillo Field Saturday afternoon. The victory was also the 200th for head coach
Erik Burstein at KU.
Goals from Kayla Argen (Cresco, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) --her team-leading fourth of the season-- and Ella Holmes (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) --the first of her college career-- proved to be the difference in the contest. The Golden Bears (5-2-1, 4-2-1 PSAC East) controlled the majority of the game, outshooting the Marauders 11-5. Emme Wolfel (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) had a solid showing in goal, making four saves.
The start of the game was positive for KU, with chances from Caroline McDonald (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) and Isabella Rossetti (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) coming in the first half hour. The Golden Bears' first goal came off a corner kick in the 38th minute. Argen bent the ball directly over the Millersville goalkeeper into the net for a 1-0 lead. It's the third time this season the Golden Bears have scored directly from a corner, with the other two coming in their 5-0 win over Mansfield Sept. 10.
The second half started with KU firmly in control as the Golden Bears looked for, and eventually found, a second goal. A ball into the box from McDonald was knocked down by a Millersville (1-5-2, 1-4-2 PSAC East) defender directly to the feet of Holmes. She then slotted the ball past the keeper for the 2-0 lead with 25 minutes left in the game. From there, the Golden Bears shut down the Marauders and held on for the 2-0 lead.
The Golden Bears, who got a bit of revenge from last year's PSAC Tournament game in which Millersville advanced in penalty kicks, improved to 4-2-1 in PSAC Eastern Division play following two straight setbacks to Bloomsburg and No. 5 West Chester.
Burstein, already KU's all-time winningest coach by a wide margin, is now 200-76-19 in 295 games over 14-plus seasons leading the Maroon and Gold. The two-time PSAC/PSAC East Coach of the Year owns a 223-105-21 career record including three seasons at Rutgers-Newark.
KU will look to keep the momentum going this upcoming week with two PSAC East home contests. The Golden Bears will first host Lock Haven, Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m.
