CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa. -- Kutztown women's tennis was one point from their first victory of the season, but Scranton rallied by claiming the last four singles matches to pull out a 5-4 victory indoors at the Birchwood Tennis Club, Saturday.
The Golden Bears jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles thanks to an 8-2 win by
Sarah Lazarchak (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) and
Jessika Klo (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) over the Royals' Lydia Grossman and Julia Nocentino at No. 3, and
Catherine Maher (Shillington, Pa./Berks Catholic) and
Claudia Makarski (Garfield, N.J./Paramus Catholic) outlasting Lily Nowak and Marissa Campo in a thrilling tiebreaker at No. 1, 8-7 (8).
Lazarchak defeated Maddy Tratthen 6-1, 6-1 at fifth singles and Klo topped Taralyn Reilly 6-4, 6-2 at sixth singles to put the Maroon and Gold (0-5) ahead 4-1, but Scranton won the next three matches in straight sets to tie it.
Nowak delivered her team the win by coming from behind to beat Makarski in a super tiebreaker at No. 2, 1-6, 6-3, 10-7. Both of Kutztown's matches this spring have been decided in the final match.
Kutztown will plays its third of six straight road matches to open the spring when it returns from Spring Break Thursday, March 24, at Penn State Harrisburg.
