Golden Bears sweep doubleheader and season series with ESU

EAST STROUDSBURG, PA (April 7, 2010) - The Kutztown University baseball team used a balanced attack to win 6-2 and 10-5 to earn a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division sweep over East Stroudsburg on Wednesday afternoon. (Game 1 boxscore) (Game 2 boxscore)

The Golden Bears, winners of seven-straight and 10 of their last 11 overall, improved to 8-4 in the PSAC East.

In the opener, starting pitcher Nate Reed picked up his third-straight win and lowered his season ERA to 3.77 after allowing just two runs. He threw his second complete game and struck out a season-high eight batters. The Warriors bats were limited to just three singles, with no runners advancing beyond second after the two-run second inning.

Shayne Houck and Matt Kulbacki each had a single and double, while Mike Dugan smacked his second homer of the season. Houck, James Quigley and Cody Montz each had RBIs for the Golden Bears.

After the pitching gem in the first game, it was the Golden Bear bats that propelled a win in the nightcap. Dugan and Houck came up huge, combining for five of the teams eight hits and knocking in nine of the 10 runs. Houck belted two home runs and now sits
one shy of the single season record of 12 set by John Rozich in 1999.

The Golden Bears raced out to a three run lead before the Warriors even stepped foot in the batters box. Dugan collected two RBIs with a double and Matt Albaugh plated another with a sacrifice fly to left.

ESU scored two in their half, but the potent Golden Bear offense countered with two in the top of the second. Jared Frey led off with a single and came around to score when Houck sent one over the fence to build a 5-2 KU advantage.

Two innings later, Houck emptied the bases with a triple to score Mike Kacelowicz, Gilbert Vega and Frey. Houck capped off the routine day, by his standards, with a solo shot to leadoff of the sixth inning.

Junior pitcher Trevor Rosenberg started the first five innings, striking out two. He allowed five runs, four earned to pick up his first win as a Golden Bear. Mike Bucklin and Adam Maini each threw a scoreless inning to close out the contest.

The Golden Bears will look to continue their momentum with a nonconference doubleheader on Thursday against Wilmington (Del.) before facing PSAC East leading West Chester for a home-and-home weekend doubleheader.
