Lanny Buck Opens Indoor Track and Field Season with Pole Vault Victory and Provisional Mark

Results

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Redshirt-senior Lanny Buck (Palmerton, Pa./Palmerton) of the Kutztown University men's track and field team picked up right where he left off last year, winning the pole vault on Saturday with a NCAA-Provisional mark. The Golden Bears kicked off their indoor season at the Bucknell University Bison Opener, securing nine Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) cuts and one new mark on the Indoor All-time top 10 list.

Buck, a two-time NCAA Outdoor National Qualifier in the pole vault, did not need long to get back in to competitive form. Buck's jump of 4.80 meters is a provisional NCAA cut and earned him the top spot at the invite. Fellow KU vaulter Brandon Raguz (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South) locked down a PSAC-mark in his first collegiate meet, placing sixth.

The Maroon and Gold saw plenty of success in the 5000-meter race. Four Golden Bears qualified for PSACs, while one runner made his way on to the KU Top 10 list. Freshman Steve Maine (Laurel Springs, N.J./Highland Regional) carried over his dominance from the cross country course onto the track, clocking the third-best time in KU history. Maine placed third in the event with a time of 15:18.43. Redshirt-senior Alex Watson (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood) would have taken over the No. 10 spot on the KU list had it not been for Maine, as he finished in 15:43.84 to place ninth. Mark Pfaeffle (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) and Chris Coates (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) immediately followed Watson with PSAC cuts.

Junior sprinter Ron Smith (Trevose, Pa./Neshaminy) was Kutztown's top finisher in both the 200- and 400- meter dashes. Freshman Mike Burton (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) set a PSAC mark in the 60m hurdles prelim, and then improved it in the finals heat to place seventh.

In the field, junior Chris Varichione (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) notched PSAC marks in both of his events. He placed 11th in the weight throw with a 15.21-meter heave, and his 14-meter toss in the shot put slotted him in 16th place.

The Golden Bears will take off for winter break, before returning to action for its annual home invitational on Jan. 15-16 at O'Pake Field House.
