Kutztown claims pair of singles matches at Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. -- Kutztown men's tennis stepped up to take on NCAA Division I Lafayette College on Tuesday afternoon and collected a pair of singles points in a 5-2 defeat at the Leopard Courts.

The host Leopards (1-0) dropped just one of 19 doubles games to sweep all three flights but the Golden Bears (1-3) fought back with a valiant effort in singles.

Kutztown trailed 3-0 in the match before Emmitt Robinson (Ingersoll, Ontario/Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute) beat Sam Gelber 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6 to get the visitors on the board. Freshman Patrick Young (Belfast, Northern Ireland/) followed with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Jake Magnusson at No. 5 to pull the Bears within 3-2.

The Golden Bears were in tightly-contested battles at No. 1 and No. 4 singles but Lafeyette prevailed in both to take the match.

Dang Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam/) fell to Derrin Lerner in the top flight showdown 1-6, 7-6 (6), 10-3, while Nick McKenzie held off Terrell Arejola (Quezon City, Philippines/Southville International School and Colleges) at No. 4 in the clincher 7-6 (5), 7-5.

Kutztown will take a break from head-to-head matches to take part in this weekend's ITA Atlantic Region Championships at Bloomsburg University before resuming its fall match schedule at Frostburg State on Friday, Oct. 10.
