BUCKHANNON, W.Va. and ELKINS, W.Va. -- The Kutztown University men's tennis team suffered a pair of setbacks to strong regional opponents West Virginia Wesleyan and Davis & Elkins out of the Mountain East Conference by matching 6-1 scores on Sunday.
Despite falling to 1-2 on the young season, the Golden Bears showed well with a number of competitive matches throughout doubles and singles play.
In the team's morning match at West Virginia Wesleyan,
Joaquin Perez (Pachuca, Mexico/Escuela Americana) accounted for KU's lone point with a 6-4, 2-6, 10-7 victory over Timothe Plaza at No. 3 singles.
Dang Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam/) played his first of two marathon matches on the day, falling just short in a a super tiebreaker against Stefan Audrins at No. 1, 3-6, 6-4, 12-10.
While the Bobcats (3-0) claimed the doubles point with a 2-1 edge,
Patrick Young (Belfast, Northern Ireland/) and
Emmitt Robinson (Ingersoll, Ontario/Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute) were 6-4 winners for the Bears over Giovani Pinhati and Ayumu Seto in the flight three match.
Sunday's matinee at Davis & Elkins came due to a rain out on Saturday.
The Senators (1-0) used a doubles sweep to set the stage for the match victory.
Nikita Safonov (Podolsk, Russia/) and Perez forced a tiebreaker in their flight two match before falling 7-6 (3) to Tom Strohschein and Simon Kiekbeld.
Raphael Hoareau Lebon (Saint-Joseph, Réunion/) held off Christo Wirahadipoernomo, 8-5, in a pro set at fifth singles to earn a point for the Maroon and Gold.
Nguyen battled tirelessly at No. 1 against Philipp Fedorczuk in a match that saw the first and second sets each go to a tiebreaker. Fedorczuk would outlast Nguyen in a super tiebreaker, 7-6 (3), 6-7 (3), 10-7.
Kutztown is on the road to face NCAA Division I Lafayette on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
