SCRANTON, Pa. – After an extra week to prepare due to a rain postponement, the Kutztown University men's tennis team looked sharp in its 7-0 victory over Scranton on Wednesday afternoon at the Royal Courts to open the 2025 fall season.
With a strong lineup ready to build on its first season under head coach Pete Smith, the Golden Bears (1-0 overall) were able to continue their success against the Royals (2-2), recording their fifth straight victory in the series and third consecutive without yielding a team point.
Emmitt Robinson (Ingersoll, Ontario/Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute) and Patrick Young (Belfast, Northern Ireland/) swept their opponents, 6-0, at third doubles, while the reigning PSAC First Team doubles duo of Dang Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam/) and Henrique Rocha (Jaticua, Brazil/Escola SEB Maceio) secured the Golden Bears' doubles point with a 6-1 win at No. 1. The second pairing of Luis Lopes (Piracicaba, Brazil/Colegio Saber) and Terrell Arejola (Quezon City, Philippines/Southville International School and Colleges) picked up a 7-5 win to complete the doubles sweep.
Kutztown continued to control Scranton in singles competition, as Arejola blanked his opponent, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6, while Raphael Hoareau Lebon (Saint-Joseph, Réunion/) posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 5, to clinch the match for the Maroon and Gold.
Nguyen secured a victory at No. 1, as opponent Max Dombrowski retired after a 6-3 defeat in the first. Senior captain Joaquin Perez (Pachuca, Mexico/Escuela Americana) finished off his fourth flight opponent with a 6-0, 6-2 straight set victory.
Nikita Safonov (Podolsk, Russia/) and Rocha each claimed super tiebreaker wins at flights two and three, respectively. Safonov topped Ethan Borick 6-4, 1-6, 10-6, while Lucas Kotcho fell to Rocha 6-4, 3-6, 10-5.
The Golden Bears are scheduled to travel to West Virginia this weekend for a pair of matches. They'll take on Davis & Elkins Saturday at 3 p.m., and West Virginia Wesleyan Sunday at noon.
