ALLEN PARK, Mich. – The Kutztown University bowling team traveled west to compete in the Intercollegiate Singles Championship (ISC) sectional qualifiers at Thunderbowl Lanes on Friday, put on by the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) to determine who will compete in the ISC National Championship in Las Vegas, Nev., at the end of the season.
The Golden Bears (50-37 overall) saw six bowlers compete in six games each, and while no one qualified as one of the top six bowlers, four Kutztown keglers bowled scores in the top half of a 175-person field that included competition from top-10 teams in No. 4 Youngstown State, No. 6 Arkansas State and No. 8 North Carolina A&T, among other ranked competition.
Graduate student Megan Hanaway (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township) finished tied for 16th overall, rolling a 1231 combined pinfall with a game-high of 255 in game four, the second-highest score in that game and the fourth-highest score bowled all day. Four of her six games were above 200 pins, a feat achieved by just 15 bowlers on Friday.
Senior Chloe Sromovski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) rolled an 1140 combined score, finishing with a 237 in the sixth and final game, placing her in a tie for 57th on the day. Not far behind was Sydney Snyder (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell-Egan Catholic) with 1118 pins (67th) and Shelby Wunch (Easton, Md./Easton) with 1081 pins (T-86th). KU saw 1000 total pinfalls from Kamryn Brenneman (York, Pa./Central York) (1060, T-98th) and Ally Sipe (York, Pa./Central York) (1052, 101st).
All six qualifying bowlers came from ranked programs, with two each coming from No. 8 North Carolina A&T and No. 15 Mount St. Mary's, while No. 4 Youngstown State and No. 6 Arkansas State will each send one representative to Las Vegas at season's end.
This competition is not NCAA affiliated, meaning it will not be counted against any team or individual records pertaining to regular or postseason awards distributed by the NCAA or its conferences. The USBC, however, has its own postseason competition and awards its own individual and team national champions separate from the NCAA.
The USBC competition continues in Michigan over the next two days, as the Golden Bears will compete in the Intercollegiate Team Championships (ITC) on Saturday, Mar. 8, and Sunday, Mar. 9, to punch their ticket to the USBC National Championships in Las Vegas following the season.
