KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- The Kutztown University men's tennis team built a 4-1 lead and went on to complete a sweep of three matche in three days with Monday afternoon's 5-2 victory over Daemen at the Keystone Courts.
The Golden Bears pulled out a pivotal doubles point by winning two of the three matches.
Emmitt Robinson (Ingersoll, Ontario/Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute) and
Linus Vennekold (Laatzen, Germany) were 6-2 winners over Rohan Chitanand and Jayven Williamson at No. 3 before the Wildcats (2-3) tied it up with a 6-3 win at No. 2.
KU used a 6-3 victory from its top pair of
Dang Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam/) and
Henrique Rocha (Jaticua, Brazil/Escola SEB Maceio) over Daemen's Juan Alvarez and Alex Lumanog to carry a 1-0 lead into singles.
Freshman
Nikita Safonov (Podolsk, Russia) delivered Kutztown's (5-0) first point of singles with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Lumanog at No. 2. Rocha followed with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph against Lucas Garcia before Daemen got on the board with a straight set win at No. 1.
Kutztown secured the win with a 6-0, 6-3 win from Vennekold over Williamson at No. 6. The Wildcats won the remaining matches at No. 4 and No. 5 to close within one by the conclusion of the match.
The Golden Bears will look to wrap up their fall season with an unblemished record when they host Eastern on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
