PHILADELPHIA -- Jefferson continued its recent run of success against the Kutztown University women's tennis team, defeating the Golden Bears 7-0, Friday, in a non-conference match at the Legacy Youth Tennis Courts.
The Rams improved to 6-3 on the season, while Kutztown fell to 1-2 overall. Jefferson has won five straight matches in the series dating back to 2017-18 and has only yielded two points to the Maroon and Gold in that time.
Jefferson raced out to an early lead with 6-0 sweeps at second and third doubles, before going on to capture all six singles matches in straight sets.
The Bears' first-year duo of
Alejandra Vera (Manta, Ecuador/Unidad Educativa Particular) and
Bieke Roovers (Leiden, Netherlands/Leonardo College) won three games off Nicole Hrbkova and Noelle Frenzel at first doubles in a 6-3 defeat.
In singles, Vera took three games from Hrbkovat at No. 1 in a 6-2, 6-1 loss.
Ava Lewis (Camp Hill, Pa./East Pennsboro) also won three against Rose Huang at No. 4, falling 6-1, 6-2, and
Sierra Smart (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) challenged Zenia Barretto in the opening set at No. 5, before dropping the match 6-3, 6-0.
Kutztown will look to bounce back Saturday when it takes on Moravian at the Keystone Courts on Family Day. Match time is 10:30 a.m.
