BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Gonzalo Barcelo (San Pedro, Argentina/Nuestra Senora del Socorro) won his first round match to reach the quarterfinals in the singles draw as the Kutztown University men's tennis team competed in the 2023 PSAC Individual Championships at Bloomsburg's Burt Reese Tennis Center on Sunday.
Â
Barcelo topped Millersville's Zach Pernia in a back-and-forth affair. After winning the first set, 6-3, Barcelo dropped the second, 6-4, but regrouped to capture the super tiebreaker 10-6.
Â
The quarterfinals provided a surprise opponent in Shepherd's Sebastian Sevilla. Sevilla knocked off No. 1 seed Bruno Sabio of Edinboro in the first round. Barcelo and Sevilla had split two prior regular season meetings, but this one went to Sevilla 7-5, 6-2.
Â
Joaquin Perez (Pachuca, Mexico/Escuela Americana) was situated in the bottom half of the 16-player singles bracket. He forced Millersville's Dylan Tull to a first set tiebreaker, but Tull emerged with a 7-6 (0), 6-4 win to move on.
Â
In doubles,
Sebastian Arizpe (Puebla, Mexico/Colegio Humboldt de Puebla) and
Justin Gincauskas (Mississauga, Ontario/Cawthra Park Secondary) drew top-seeded Rocco Palombarini and Bruno Sabio of Edinboro. The Bears' tandem put up a valiant effort before falling 8-5.
Â
Kutztown's fall season is now complete. The Golden Bears will return to action in late February when they face West Virginia Wesleyan on the 23rd.
