STEUBENVILLE, Ohio --Â Kutztown University men's tennis wrapped up a perfect weekend with a 6-1 victory over Franciscan University of Steubenville on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Bears (2-1) got a battle from the host Barons, primarily in doubles, but emerged with their second win in as many days after taking down West Liberty, 7-0, Friday.
Dang Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam/) and
Henrique Rocha (Jaticua, Brazil/Escola SEB Maceio) grabbed a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles.
Nikita Safonov (Podolsk, Russia/) and
Callum Judd (Ware, England/Culford School), who was making his collegiate debut, were 6-3 victors at No. 2 and KU completed the doubles sweep with a 6-4 win from
Luis Lopes (Piracicaba, Brazil/Colegio Saber) and
Raphael Hoareau Lebon (Saint-Joseph, Réunion/Lycee de Vincendo) at No. 3.
Coach
Pete Smith rolled out a new lineup, allowing depth players to get experience with the busy weekend.
Patrick Young (Belfast, Northern Ireland/) slid into the No. 1 spot in singles and took care of Aaron Heinlein 6-1, 6-1. Judd won his first career singles match 6-0, 6-1 over Owen Blattel at No. 5 and Hoareau Lebon defeated Will Howell 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4.
Freshman
Nacho Costa (Buenos Aires, Argentina) picked up a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Christopher Yvars at No. 2 and Safonov defeated Elijah Clink 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3.
Franciscan (0-1) picked up its lone point at No. 6 singles where Alexander Burns rallied past
Bayto Cokrlija (Lehighton, Pa./Lehighton), who was making his collegiate debut, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Kutztown will get back on the road to face Drew this coming Thursday, Oct. 1, at 4 p.m. The Golden Bears will play their only home match of the fall next Saturday, Oct. 3, against Davis & Elkins at noon.
