Lafayette grounds Golden Bears in fall debut, 6-1

EASTON, Pa. -- Kutztown University men's tennis got wins at No. 1 doubles and No. 3 singles but dropped its 2026-27 season-opener at NCAA Division I Lafayette, Wednesday afternoon.

The host Leopards (1-0) claimed the doubles point with a 6-1 win at No. 3 and 6-3 win at No. 2 before Kutztown's top flight duo of Dang Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam/) and Henrique Rocha (Jaticua, Brazil/Escola SEB Maceio) topped Ricky Espaillat and Tomas Grygalis, 6-4.

KU (0-1) got its only point early in singles when Argentinian freshman Nacho Costa (Buenos Aires, Argentina) defeated Aidan Mahaffey at No. 3, 7-6 (2), 6-0. Costa also played No. 2 doubles with Patrick Young (Belfast, Northern Ireland/) in his collegiate debut.

The Golden Bears won multiple games at all six singles flights. Luis Lopes (Piracicaba, Brazil/Colegio Saber) battled hard at No. 6 in a 7-5, 6-3 setback against Piotr Kowalik. Nguyen took seven games off Espaillat at No. 1 in a 6-3, 6-4 loss.

Kutztown will play its next three matches on the road, starting with a trip to West Liberty and Franciscan (Ohio) on Sept. 25-26. The Bears are scheduled to play one home match during the fall portion of their schedule, Saturday, Oct. 3, against Davis & Elkins.
