WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. --Â Kutztown University men's tennis broke into the win column for the first time this season with a dominant 7-0 victory at West Liberty Friday afternoon.
The Golden Bears (1-1) ran away with nearly every match, ceding just two games between three doubles flights and taking all six singles flights in straight sets.
KU got off to a quick start with a pair of 6-0 sweeps to secure the doubles point.
Luis Lopes (Piracicaba, Brazil/Colegio Saber) and Raphael Horeau Lebon shutout Robert Lindsey and Aidan Lucas at No. 3, while
Patrick Young (Belfast, Northern Ireland/) and
Nacho Costa (Buenos Aires, Argentina) blanked Austin Zgurski and Jacob Burchfield at No. 2. The Bears' top pair of
Dang Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam/) and
Henrique Rocha (Jaticua, Brazil/Escola SEB Maceio) beat the Hilltoppers' Siddarth Madhavan and Ignacio Giurfa, 6-2.
It didn't take long into singles for Kutztown to clinch the match. Young defeated Giurfa 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2, Rocha swept Lindsey 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 and Nguyen turned back Madhavan 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1.
Even with the team result locked up, the Golden Bears pushed forward to finish off an unblemished afternoon. Costa beat Zgurski 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3, Lopes didn't drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 win over Burchfield at No. 6 and
Nikita Safonov (Podolsk, Russia/) closed it out with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Lucas at No. 5.
Kutztown will look for a perfect 2-0 weekend when it plays at Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio, tomorrow at noon.
