MILLERSVILLE, Pa. -- Anthony DeFusco (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) finished third in the triple jump, while
Jason Mraz (Edison, N.J./Edison) took third in the pole vault, as the pair of Kutztown University men's track & field athletes earned their first career outdoor conference medals to lead the Golden Bears during Saturday's final day of the PSAC Outdoor Championships.
DeFusco used the second longest jump of his career, measuring 14.36m (47'1.5") to keep hold of his pre-meet third-place projection and claim the bronze. The Douglassville, Pa., and Daniel Boone product earned KU six points in the standings, bettering his sixth-place finish at last year's PSAC outdoor meet and a fourth-place showing at this year's indoor meet.
Mraz, coming off a runner-up finish at indoors, almost replicated that feat. The sophomore from Edison, N.J., cleared a career best 4.55m (14'11"), which was actually the same as runner-up Grant Fox from East Stroudsburg, but Fox won silver for doing it in fewer attempts.
Outside of its jumpers, Kutztown's final day success was largely on the shoulders of its hurdler
Don Hill (Philadelphia, Pa./Neshaminy) and its relays.
Hill qualified for the final of the 400m hurdles, Friday, with a 56.91. In the finals, he picked up nearly four-tenths of a second to establish a new PR of 56.58, good for a sixth-place finish and three team points.
The 4x400m relay of
Domenick Wallace (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills),
Savaughn Hebron (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy), Hill and
Matt Salazar (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) closed the meet with a season best 3:20.75 to take fifth. Earlier in the day, Hebron,
Tyeshawn Worrell (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg), Hill and
Justin Robinson (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) finished seventh in the 4x100m relay in 44.09.
Freshman
Nate Schaeffer (Mohrsville, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) posted a 10th-place result in the pole vault (4.20m/13'9.25") in his PSAC Outdoor Championships debut, while
Logan Iacobelli (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland) produced a PR of 15:22.85 to claim 13th in the 5000m.
Kutztown shared 10th place in the team standings with Bloomsburg, both registering 33 points on the weekend. It was a tight battle in the mid pack with sixth-place Seton Hill (44 pts.), seventh-place West Chester (39.5 pts.), eighth-place Lock Haven (38 pts.), ninth-place IUP (37.5 pts.) and the Golden Bears and Huskies all separated by just 11 points.
The Golden Bears don't currently have additional meets scheduled, but may look for some last chance opportunities if they have student-athletes that can make a run at qualifying for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships at the end of this month in Allendale, Mich.
