Szeplaki earns gold in the pole vault as KU men finish fourth at PSAC Outdoor Championships

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Andrew Szeplaki (Bath, Pa./Northampton) double dipped to cap his freshman season in Maroon and Gold as he was crowned Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference in the pole vault Saturday to end the third and final day of the PSAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Shippensburg University.

The Golden Bears finished fourth overall in the team standings with 79 points. It's the second time in the last three seasons that the Maroon and Gold had at least a fourth place finish.

Szeplaki, who also earned a PSAC title in the indoor championships in Feb., cleared a high mark of 5.05m (16-6.75), which is an NCAA Provisional. Henry Cifaloglio (Vineland, N.J./Delsea Regional) tallied a mark of 4.51m (14-9.5) to earn a point for his team in the PV.

Jaydon Witman (Hamburg, Pa./Hamburg) earned silver in the 110m hurdles crossing the finish line in 14.20, which sets a new KU record and is an NCAA Provisional, also earning eight team points. Kymanni Johnson (Baltimore, Md./Overlea) ran a 10.42 in the 100m final for bronze, tying the program record and netting six points. Kevin Givone (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) also placed third for bronze in the javelin with a furthest throw of 61.35m (201-3) for six points and a Provisional.

The 4x100 relay team of Michael Fellin (Sheppton, Pa./Marian Catholic), Daron Haggans (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin), Sean Singleton (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) and Johnson finished with a time of 40.84 for the silver medal. The 4x400 relay team, consisting of Steele Wrigley (Coatesville, Pa./Octorara), Haggans, Ryan Kenneff (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) and Witman placed sixth for three team points.

Haggans and Robby Lloyd (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) both earned five team points with fourth place finishes in the 200m and 5000m, respectively. Fellin and Adam Brocato (Reisterstown, Md./Calvert Hall) both netted a point in the 100m and 1500m, respectively, and James Washburn (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) recorded a fifth place finish in the 400m hurdles with a time of 54.69 for four points.

Shippensburg won the PSAC team title with 211.5 points, 74 points clear of second place Slippery Rock.

Kutztown will now wait to see if any student-athletes will be selected for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Emporia, Kan., from May 21-23.
