MILLERSVILLE, Pa. -- Junior
Darien Clarke (Middletown, Del./Appoquinimink) got off to a strong start in the decathlon, sitting seventh halfway through, while sophomore
Logan Iacobelli (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland) posted the eighth fastest 10,000-meter time in Kutztown University men's track & field history Thursday night, running a 31:59.76 to wrap up the opening day of action at the 2022 PSAC Outdoor Championships, hosted by Millersville.
The Breinigsville native paced himself early in the 25-lap event, settling in just outside the top 10. Through the middle stages of the race, Iacobelli's splits remained consistent and he started to pick off competing runners. Iacobelli ran his fast lap of 1:14.24 on his 14th circuit around the Biemesderfer Stadium track and gained two spots to move up sixth place.
Though he slipped back a pair of spots in each of the next two laps, Iacobelli remained in the top 10 the rest of the way and became the first Golden Bear to run a sub-32 minute 10k since Steve Maine in 2016 (30:31.35) with his new personal record.
Kutztown was also represented in the event by
Ryan Smith (North Plainfield, N.J./North Plainfield) and
Jack Hollar (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Pocono Mountain East). Smith placed 15th in 33:07.68, while Hollar was 21st in 33:49.87.
The only other KU competitors Thursday were decathletes
Cameron Baumgardner (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin) and
Darien Clarke (Middletown, Del./Appoquinimink), who were both in fine form.
Clarke came in seeded 12th, but sits a surprise seventh after putting forth personal records in the shot put (10.51m/34'5.75") and 400m (56.00). Clarke totaled 2945 points through the first five events, with a fourth in the shot put his best finish among his competitors (516 pts.). He was sixth in the high jump, eighth in the long jump and ninth in the 100m.
Baumgardner collected 2695 points behind a fantastic third-place showing in the shot put (10.87m/35'8"), good for 538 pts., and a seventh in the long jump (6.04m/19'9.75") for 595 pts. He posted a PR in the 100m (12.32), 400m (57.74) and tied a PR in the high jump (1.62m/5'3.75").
The decathlon concludes Friday with the 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500m. Events resume at 10 a.m. There will be events throughout the day as Kutztown has athletes in the high jump, 4x100m relay prelims, 110m hurdles prelims, 100m prelims, discus, long jump, 800m prelims, 400m hurdles prelims and the 3,000m steeplechase.
