Golden Bears cut strokes during final round of the Cottrell Invitational, finish fifth

WEST CHESTER, Pa. -- The Kutztown University women's golf team improved its score by 17 shots and logged a fifth-place finish as final round action at the Dr. Edwin Cottrell Invitational wrapped up Tuesday afternoon at Penn Oaks Golf Club.

Olivia Donnini (Wapwallopen, Pa./Crestwood) and Cecelia Knecht (North Charleston, S.C./Fort Dorchester) led the way for KU, sporting matching 92s (+21) on the par 71, 5813-yard course. Donnini carded a team-high six pars on the day, while Knecht produced four.

Knecht finished the tournament as the Golden Bears' top ranking player in 17th among 45 entries. The North Charleston, S.C., native had a two-day total of 44-over par 186 (94-92). Donnini came in a tie for 22nd with West Chester's Josephine Genuardi at 46-over 188 (96-92).

Freshman Alivia Miesowitz (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton) placed 30th with a 199. Behind four pars, Miesowitz cut a pair of shots off her opening round score (100-98).

Grace Babinchak (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton) was the biggest mover of the day for the Maroon and Gold, slicing nine shots off her first day total to bump up to 33rd overall with a two-round score of 201 (105-96).

Rounding out KU's contingent was Alexis Verdes (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Township) with a 237 (117-120).

Le Moyne's Mia Avontins maintained her spot atop the leaderboard with a second round 81, winning the tournament with an 18-over 160 (79-81).

The host Golden Rams shot 343 to overcome a two-shot deficit at the start of the day and win their home tournament by one shot over Millersville and five over Cal U, the co-leaders after Monday's first round. West Chester finished at 702 (+59).

Kutztown's busy week continues Saturday with a trip to the Millersville Invitational and concludes Sunday with the Kutztown Spring Invitational at Moselem Springs Golf Club (noon start).
