Smith wins 10K, Golden Bear men surpass 11 PSAC qualifying standards

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -- Ryan Smith (North Plainfield, N.J./North Plainfield) ran to victory in the 10,000-meters as the Kutztown University men's track & field team registered 11 top five event finishes and surpassed 11 PSAC qualifying standards at Saturday's Shippensburg-hosted Paul Kaiser Classic.

Making his debut in the 10K, Smith bested eight other runners to win the event in a PSAC qualifying time of 32:59.05. Teammate Jack Hollar (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) was third in 33:22.65, also qualifying for the upcoming conference meet.

Three additional PSAC times were set on the track. Sophomore Logan Iacobelli (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland) laid down a personal record of 15:26.16 to finish fifth of 20 competitors in the 5000m and newcomer Don Hill (Philadelphia, Pa./Neshaminy) placed fifth in the 400m hurdles with a 57.14. Sophomore Justin Robinson (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) registered a PR of 15.85 to take ninth in the 110m hurdles.

Kutztown turned in the third fastest 4x400m relay time of nine teams with Savaughn Hebron (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy), Domenick Wallace (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills), Hill and Matt Salazar (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) finishing in 3:21.18.

Freshman Anthony Helmstetter (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) paced the Maroon and Gold in the field events with his runner-up finish in the javelin. Helmstetter threw a PR and PSAC mark of 54.93m (180'2"), clipping his former standard from the Bucknell Bison Open by an inch.

Anthony DeFusco (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) supplied a pair of top five finishes in the jumps, placing third in the triple jump with another PSAC standard of 14.15m (46'5.25") and fifth in the long jump at 6.70m (21'11.75").

Harley Cheatham (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) and TJ White (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) recorded matching marks in the high jump at 1.95m (6'4.75"). Both exceeded the PSAC qualifying mark, with Cheatham tying a PR and White setting a new one. Cheatham was credited with third place by virtue of clearing 1.95m on his second attempt. White was fourth, clearing on his third try.

In the pole vault, talented sophomore Jason Mraz (Edison, N.J./Edison) collected a third-place finish with a new PR and PSAC mark of 4.50m (14'9"). Freshman Nate Schaeffer (Mohrsville, Pa./Schuylkill Valley), a Schuylkill Valley grad, tied a PR with a best vault of 4.20m (13'9.25") to take sixth.

Kutztown is scheduled to be in action next at the 2022 PSAC Outdoor Championships, May 12-14, at Millersville University, but may add a last chance meet next week, giving its student-athletes another opportunity to set conference or national marks.
