Clarke, Baumgardner fighting for top five after opening day of the Mondschein Multi

KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Darien Clarke (Middletown, Del./Appoquinimink) and Cameron Baumgardner (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin), Kutztown University men's track & field's two entries into this year's Mondschein Multi, sit just 24 points apart and hold the fifth and sixth spots in the 11-man field after five events were contested, Wednesday, at Andre Reed Stadium.

Clarke put forth 2,722 points with a solid all-around day to rank fifth, while Baumgardner is sixth at 2,698 points after winning the shot put and setting a pair of personal records.

Clarke opened the meet with an 11.95 in the 100-meter dash, good for 661 points, his most in any event. He followed that up with 508 in the long jump (5.63m/18'5.75"), 493 in the shot put (10.12m/33'2.5"), 528 in the high jump (1.68m/5'6") and 532 in the 400m (56.72).

The junior from Middletown, Del., secured his best finishing position among his peers in the shot put, where he was fourth. Clarke's 400m time was a new personal best.

Baumgardner topped all 10 of his competitors in the shot put with a throw of 11.29m (37'0.5"), good for 563 points. His top point-scoring event actually came in the long jump, however, where he was third best on the day with a personal best mark of 6.29m (20.7.75") for 650 points.

A native of Emmitsburg, Md., Baumgardner also placed ninth in the high jump (1.62m/5'3.75"/480 pts.), 10th in the 400m with a personal best 58.42 (469 pts.) and 11th in the 100m (12.61/536 pts.).

Jonathan Scamardella of Stevens leads a tight four-way race in the event with 3,073 points. Bloomsburg's Doug Walsh is second at 3,065 points, Oscar Jopp of Lafayette is third at 3,053 points and Stephen Gray of Thomas fourth at 3,032 points --a separation of just 41 points between first and fourth.

The meet concludes Thursday beginning at 9 a.m. with the decathletes taking part in the 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500m.
