Jumpers excel for men's track & field at WCU Quad+ Invitational

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Jumpers accounted for five of Kutztown University's six Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualifying marks, as the Golden Bear men's track & field team began its 2022 outdoor season at Saturday's West Chester Quad+ Invitational.

Newcomers Jason Mraz (Edison, N.J./Edison) and Nate Schaeffer (Mohrsville, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) took the top two spots in the pole vault, both eclipsing the PSAC Championship qualifying standard. Mraz cleared 4.35m (14'3.25") in his outdoor debut to win the event, while Schaeffer, a Schuylkill Valley grad, vaulted 4.20m (13'9.25").

KU also featured a pair of qualifiers in the high jump, where freshman TJ White (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg), another Berks Countian from Muhlenberg, won with a best effort of 1.80m (6'2.75"). Junior Harley Cheatham (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) surpassed 6-feet as well, going 1.85m (6'0.75").

The Golden Bears got an event victory from a third intercounty student-athlete when Daniel Boone grad Anthony DeFusco (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) took top honors in the triple jump with a PSAC qualifying mark of 13.23m (43'5").

Joan Estrella (Reading, Pa./Reading), last year's bronze medalist in the javelin at the PSAC Outdoor Championships, got his season off to a strong start, punching his return ticket to the conference meet with a throw of 53.19m (174'6").

On the track, freshman Domenick Wallace (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) collected the Bears' lone win, holding off teammates Savaughn Hebron (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) and Matt Salazar (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) with a time of 51.78 in the 400 meters. Fellow freshman Port Habalar (Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) was Kutztown's top finisher in both mid-distance events, recording the fourth-fastest time among 13 competitors in the 1500m (4:13.62) and ranking seventh of 16 runners in the 800m (2:03.49).

Kutztown will be back in action next weekend when it sends athletes to the Colonial Relays at William & Mary (Thursday-Saturday) and the Millersville Metrics (Saturday).
