Brown records fifth-longest hammer throw in KU history on opening day of PSAC Outdoor Championships

RESULTS

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -- Senior Larry Brown (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) moved into fifth-place on Kutztown University's all-time top 10 list in the hammer throw with a new personal-best of 52.58 meters (172-6), Thursday, as the Golden Bears opened the 2021 PSAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Shippensburg University's Seth Grove Stadium.

Coming off a new PR at last week's WCU Last Dance Invitational which qualified him for the PSAC meet, Brown backed it up with another to finish in a tie for sixth. The Harrisburg native came out of the gates strong with his best throw in his first attempt. Brown initially slotted in third after the first round of throws, but couldn't better the 172-foot, 6-inch heave during his three additional measured tries.

Brown took a significant step forward after placing 14th in the event at the 2019 PSAC Outdoor Championships and scored points at the conference meet for the first time. He outperformed his pre-meet seeding of ninth, while also leaping over Chris Verichione (2016) and James Dart (2008) on KU's top 10 list.

Opening day mostly belonged to the decathletes, with the first five events being contested.

Sophomore Darien Clarke (Middletown, Del./Appoquinimink) represented the Maroon and Gold and is two spots out of the points into 10th heading into Friday. Clarke scored 2726 points, with his best finish relative to his competitors coming in the shot put. Clarke's throw of 9.60m (31-6) ranked fourth of 12 competitors. As for overall performance, Clarke's 11.74 in the 100m dash earned him 703 points --most of any event he competed in.

Kutztown's only other entry on Thursday was senior Derek Barney (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) in the 10,000m. Barney, from Oakland, N.J., picked off a few spots during the middle and latter stages of race, eventually settling in 13th where he finished in a time of 33:47.02. It marked a three-spot improvement over his pre-meet seeding.

Brown earned Kutztown 2.5 points, putting the Golden Bears seventh in the team standings. Only the hammer and 10,000m paid points Thursday. Host Shippensburg jumped out to an early 20-point lead over East Stroudsburg with 34 total between the two events.

Clarke will resume the decathlon at 10 a.m. Friday on a jam-packed day that will see 15 Golden Bears compete in individual events and the 4x100m relay team in action.
