WEST CHESTER, Pa. -- Xavier Feliciano's (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett) NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 4.81m (15-9.25) won the pole vault and the Kutztown University men's track & field team also went on to sweep the high, long and triple jumps behind freshmen
Jordon Floyd (Westampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) and
Anthony DeFusco (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) at Saturday's West Chester University-hosted Last Dance Invitational.
Feliciano, who qualified for the 2020 NCAA DII Indoor Championships in the pole vault and was on-site in Birmingham, Ala., before the meet was canceled due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, put worth his best career vault to move into ninth all-time at KU and best nine other competitors. By clearing 15-feet, 9.25-inches, the senior from Kennett Square, Pa., moved atop the conference standings in the event ahead of next weekend's PSAC Outdoor Championships.
The jumps continued to be kind to the Golden Bears, as DeFusco, a native Berks Countian, captured the triple jump for the second time in his last three meets. The Daniel Boone grad moved from a 10th-place tie to eighth on KU's top 10 list with a best jump of 14.13m (46-4.25). Prior to this weekend's action, DeFusco's mark would have placed him third in the PSAC.
Floyd was a two-time winner, Saturday, topping seven competitors in the long jump and five others in the high jump. The rookie from Westampton, N.J, edged teammate
Tommy Oliver (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) in the high jump despite the duo each clearing 1.87m (6-1.5). In the long jump, it was another 1-2 for the Maroon and Gold with Floyd (6.77m/22-2.5) and
Tanner Karycki (Mount Carmel, Pa./Mount Carmel) (6.50m/21-4) claiming the top two spots. For the event runners-up Oliver (HJ) and Karycki (LJ), their performances will put them in contention to qualify for those respective events at the PSAC meet.
Unlike years past when qualifying times and marks were used, this year's meet will take the top 16 performers in each event in a similar format to the NCAA Championships to reduce the number of participants gathering at Shippensburg University and mitigate the risk surrounding COVID-19.
Senior thrower
Larry Brown (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin), making his fourth appearance in the hammer this spring, set a new personal record and fired the seventh-longest throw in program history at 51.19m (167-11). Brown and
Tyler Fenske (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) competed in the shot put, discus and hammer. Fenske finished fifth in the shot put with a PR of 12.90m (42-4) that puts him on the edge of qualifying for PSACs.
It was a light day on the track for Kutztown, but those that did compete made an impact.
Freshman
Tyeshawn Worrell (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) made his collegiate debut in the 100-meter dash and turned in the second-fastest time of the day with a 10.94, which ranked ninth in the PSAC prior to the weekend.
Savaughn Hebron (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) set a pair of PRs with a 22.78 in the 200m and a 50.41 in the 400m. Both times ranked within the top 16 in the PSAC, with the latter time seventh.
Teagan Fortna (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) also took part in the 200m and 400m, sprinting to personal bests in both events.
Accepted entries for the 2021 PSAC Outdoor Championships should be finalized by Monday night. The conference championships get underway Thursday, May 6.
