Preview: Kutztown Football heads west to take on California, looking to remain unbeaten

Live Stats | Live Video

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Following a 54-16 season-opening victory against Assumption, the Kutztown University football team hits the road for the first time in 2019, heading west to tussle with California (1-0) in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)-opener for both teams. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. at Adamson Stadium.

The Golden Bears and Vulcans will both be looking to start league play off on the right foot and remain undefeated overall. The two teams had similar week one triumphs, with Cal defeating Saint Anselm 59-13 on the road, and KU also eclipsed 50 points with its 54-16 win at Andre Reed Stadium last Saturday.

Kutztown won the last meeting between the foes, 34-31, on Sept. 8, of last season. KU leads the all-time series 8-3-1, but one of the Vulcans' three wins against the Golden Bears happened in the 2016 PSAC Championship game, the last time that either team was in the big game.

KU broke the half century mark in points for just the second time in the last two seasons, and was led by redshirt-senior quarterback Collin DiGalbo (Secane, Pa./Monsignor Bonner). He tied a career-high with six offensive touchdowns and accounted for 352 total yards last weekend in earning PSAC East Offensive Athlete of the Week honors for week one.

Seven different receivers caught passes, including Jack Pilkerton (La Plata, Md./La Plata) and Jake Novak (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central), who each hauled in two touchdowns, for a Golden Bears offense that racked up 629 yards, the most since they tallied 668 at East Stroudsburg back on Oct. 15, 2016. Diego Torres (York, Pa./West York) had three catches for 59 yards and Mason McElroy (Reading, Pa./Wilson) recorded two receptions for 67 yards. On the ground, Abdul-Hassan Neblett (Newark, N.J./Paramus Catholic) led the way with 104 yards on 10 carries, and Darryl Davis-McNeil (Roslyn, Pa./Abington) rushed nine times for 55 yards and his first career touchdown.

Defensively, Shawn Turber-Ortiz (Northumberland, Pa./Shikellamy) led the way with 11 tackles (six solo). Nyiem Nevarez (Effort, Pa./Pleasant Valley) added five, as did Kyle Sapp (Westampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional), who also was in on a tackle for loss and made his first career interception. Ahkee Cox-Cowan (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg) came away with KU's other pick.

Kutztown will have to take care of the ball against California, who scored 31 of its 59 points last weekend off turnovers. The Vulcans forced seven turnovers and scored a pair of touchdowns on defense, ranking them second in Division II in turnovers forced. Cal sophomore quarterback Noah Mitchell tied his career-high with three touchdown passes. He finished with 239 passing yards on 15-of-27 attempts with no interceptions, and like DiGalbo, did not play in the fourth quarter. Senior running back Nelson Brown led the team with 75 rushing yards and 14 attempts.

Expect another high-scoring contest as both teams can put the ball in the endzone.
