KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's tennis team was nearly unbeatable in its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opening match, winning eight-of-nine matches in two different locations on campus, taking down Shippensburg University 8-1 Tuesday afternoon.
The Golden Bears snapped a seven-match losing streak, dating back to the fall season, and had success at nearly every flight.
After winning all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 team lead, the singles lineup was forced to move indoors, as rain called for the remainder of play to move inside to three courts in O'Pake Fieldhouse, compared to six at Keystone Courts.
Taylor Capoferri (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) and
Kara Urland (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) teamed together at the No. 1 flight for doubles, and came away victorious 8-1. The duo were also on the winning end of their singles matches at No. 1 and No. 4 respectively. It was the first singles victory of the year for Urland.
Yasmeen Malik (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser) and
Shadimon Navarro (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) also won both of their doubles and singles matches Tuesday. Malik and
Alicia Pursell (Hamburg, Pa./Hamburg Area), and Navarro and
Mackenzie Delp (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) rounded out the doubles winners circle for KU. Navarro is now 3-1 in singles so far this year.
Freshman
Elyssa Tomczyk (Plainville, Conn./Plainville) picked up a win in singles 6-0, 6-1.
