KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University men's tennis team swept its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division rival Millersville in a 9-0 decision Saturday afternoon at Keystone Courts.
KU (2-7, 2-0 PSAC) opened the day emphatically, going 3-for-3 in doubles matches.
The duo of
Joan Oliver Perez (Andratx, Spain/IES Baltasar Porcel) and
Martin Munoz (Las Palmas, Spain/Claret (Post)) teamed up at the No. 1 flight for an 8-3 victory. The early momentum continued into No. 2 doubles where
Nikolay Kodinov (Plovdiv, Bulgaria/Model High School of Mathematics) and
Gabriel Nogara Souza (Curitiba, Brazil/Dom Bosco) earned a dominating 8-2 win.
David Nunez Contreras (Madrid, Spain/Mater Immaculata) and
Josh Carl (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) capped Kutztown's doubles action with an 8-1 win heading into singles action.
The Maroon and Gold continued their momentum heading into singles matches, as every Golden Bear defeated their opponent on Saturday by dominating margins. Perez sparked KU's campaign for a shutout victory, topping his first flight opponent 6-1, 6-0.
Kodinov continued his successful opening to the day, following Perez with a 6-3, 6-2 decision at No. 2 singles, while Munoz closed his No. 3 singles match with a 6-1 victory in the first set, followed by a 6-3 win in the second.
Nogara Souza led the Golden Bears in singles action, capping the fourth flight with 6-0 wins in each set, while Nunez Contreras nearly followed suit with a sweep as he dropped just one game at the fifth flight.
Carl closed Kutztown's successful day at the courts with 6-1 wins in each of his two sets at No. 6 singles.
KU hits the road for its next non-conference matchup against Bloomfield this Tuesday, April 4, beginning at 2:30 p.m.
