KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Six members of the Kutztown University tennis program are prepared to compete at the 2016 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Individual Tennis Championships, hosted by Bloomsburg University, this weekend, Oct. 7-9.
On the women's side, senior
Alyssa Konas (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) and freshman
Taylor Capoferri (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) will represent KU in both singles and doubles play. The single-elimination singles tournament features 32 competitors from 13 schools, while the doubles tournament, also single-elimination, consists of 16 pairs.
Konas gives the Golden Bears an experienced veteran in the field as she competed at the 2015 Championships, winning two games in her first round matchup. Capoferri on the other hand gets the opportunity to experience postseason play in just her second month as a collegiate competitor. The rookie has won a team-high 11 singles games this year.
In doubles play, Konas and Capoferri earned Kutztown's lone victory of the year on Sept. 10, defeating their opponents from Roberts Wesleyan 8-6 at the No. 1 position.
Juniors
Joan Oliver Perez (Andratx, Spain/IES Baltasar Porcel),
Martin Munoz (Las Palmas, Spain/Claret (Post)),
Nikolay Kodinov (Plovdiv, Bulgaria/Model High School of Mathematics) and
Gabriel Nogara Souza (Curitiba, Brazil/Dom Bosco) are the men's representatives. Oliver Perez and Munoz will take the court in the singles field, which features 16 participants from six schools, while Koinov and Nogara Souza will team together in the eight-team doubles bracket.
Oliver Perez dropped a close 6-4, 6-4 first round match in 2015 and is poised to build upon that experience this weekend. Munoz, a transfer from Post, began his KU career on Sept. 10 with a three-set defeat at No. 2 singles versus Roberts Wesleyan.
Kodinov and Nogara Souza won the only match they played together this season, winning an 8-4 decision at the second flight in Kutztown's season-opener against Roberts Wesleyan. Kodinov was also one of two Golden Bears triumphant at singles on that day, taking his No. 4 flight match 6-3, 6-2.
Action from Bloomsburg this weekend gets underway on Friday at 3 p.m., beginning with the women's round of 32, and will continue throughout the day as all first round matches are scheduled to be completed.
