KUTZTOWN, Pa. - The Kutztown University football team enters week four, looking to get back in the win column. With a recent upswing in the series against West Chester, the Golden Bears will try to grab their third straight win over the Golden Rams for the first time in program history. The Maroon and Gold will need a big day from the second ranked scoring offense in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference at 46.7 points per game.
Kick off is set for 1:05 p.m. on Saturday, September 22 at University Field on the KU Campus.
COMPLETE GAME NOTES
Head coach Raymond Monica, who is his seventh season in charge of the Golden Bears, is in search of his 40th win, something that only two other coaches have accomplished in KU's history.
At quarterback, freshman
Josh Luckenbaugh (York, Pa./Dallastown) gets his first start of his career in place of the injured
Kevin Morton (Abington, PA/Abington) who set the record for all-time passing yardage. Luckenbaugh came in during the second half of last week's game to go 16-for-24 for 194 yards and two touchdowns. In the only other action he has seen this year, he went 2-for-2 for 22 yards in relief effort against Saint Anselm.
Replacing the injured
Josh Mastromatto (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin), junior
Curtis Wortham (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) turned in his second 100-yard rushing game of the season against Bloomsburg with 102 yards on 21 carries. He also caught two balls, one for a gain of 30 yards. Splitting the duties as the back up to Wortham will be senior
Jeremy Tucker (Dover, NJ/Pope John XXIII Regional) and sophomore
Adrian Sterling (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg North).
The team's most consistent receiver, senior
Colby Tuell (Columbia, PA/Columbia) brings solid numbers into this week four battle as he has hauled in 22 passes for 276 yards and four touchdowns. Last week also saw the coming out party for a pair of sophomore receivers,
Shahaid Smith (Ridley, PA/Ridley) and
Kodi Reed (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic). Reed led the group last week with eight receptions for 119 yards and two scores at Bloomsburg, while Smith caught 12 balls for 113 yards.
Giving up 32 points a game, the defense will be counted on to put a halt to the West Chester attack that put up 56 points against Millersville last week. The unit will look to sophomore
Zach Greenwald (Gibbstown, N.J./Paulsboro) who has been on a mission forcing three fumbles last week to go with his 22 tackles on the season.
Behind the line, sophomore Sam Dixon-Dugan and junior
Matt Connors (Mechanicsburg, PA/Trinity) and senior
Cory Darby (District Heights, MD/Wise) will be relied on from the linebacker position. The three have meshed well together, making 49 stops this season, while Connors has one of the defense's four interceptions.
Leading the team in tackles, sophomore
English Peay (Philadelphia, Pa./George Washington) ranks in the top 10 in the PSAC with 24 stops. He has added one tackle for loss and three pass break ups. In place of the injured
Alex DiNolfi (Norristown, PA/Norristown), sophomore
Greg Carroll (Unionville, PA/Unionville) had a busy week against Bloomsburg making 17 tackles, the most by a Golden Bear since the 2007 season.
Entering his tenth season at WCU, the Golden Rams are coached by Bill Zwaan who has put together a 70-39 (.642) record throughout his tenure. The three-time PSAC Coach of the Year will rely on the arm of Mike Mattei, last week's PSAC East Co-Offensive Player of the Week as the team makes the trip to University Field.
Of the 655 total yards gained in last week's 56-14 victory over Millersville, Mattei accounted 358 through the air and six touchdowns. He has been off to a hot start in 2012 with 635 yards and 11 scores.
His favorite target, Erick Brundidge paces the team with four receiving touchdowns with 240 yards in three games. Brundidge has been a deep threat all season averaging over 21 yards per catch including a 69-yard reception against Millersville last week.
On the defensive side of the field, the Golden Rams have been stingy, picking off seven passes. Safety John O'Donnell leads the group, as he has registered 15 tackles with two interceptions, including one returned for a score against Gannon. Helping him out will be Ronell Williams who has been a mainstay in the middle of the defense making 28 tackles and picking off one pass.
Since allowing 41 points in the loss to FCS opponent Delaware, the defense has tightened up, giving up just 20 points in two weeks as the unit has lifted the Rams to wins over Gannon and Millersville.
