KU baseball swept by Millersville in conference finale

MILLERSVILLE, PA (April 24, 2010) - The Kutztown University baseball team was swept by Millersville, 3-2 and 6-0, in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. (Game 1 boxscore) (Game 2 boxscore)

The Golden Bears (34-11, 16-8) were edged out by West Chester (35-10, 17-7) for the regular season PSAC East title by one game. Millersville and East Stroudsburg finished tied for the final playoff spot, which will be determined through tiebreaker.

The PSAC playoffs will begin on Wednesday April 28 at Johnstown, Pa. The Golden Bears will face the West No. 3 seed Mercyhurst at 3:30 p.m.

In the opener, KU was edged out in 11 innings. The Golden Bears recorded both of their runs in the first inning, off RBI singles by Mike Dugan and Matt Kulbacki.

Junior James Quigley and Jared Frey scored the runs and led KU in hitting. Quigley was 3-for-4, while Frey went 2-for-3 at the dish.

Nathan Reed, coming off his no-hit performance on Sunday against Bloomsburg, pitched 5.1 innings allowing two runs - one earned - and struck out three. Adam Maini suffered the loss, but pitched three strong innings of relief with three punchouts.

The Maruaders chipped away with a single run in the third and sixth to force extras. Starting pitcher Ryan Stauffer gave a solid effort with 9.1 innings pitched and four strikeouts.

In the nightcap the Golden Bears were held to just four hits. Frey, Dugan, Gilbert Vega and Cody Montz each recorded a hit apiece.

The Golden Bears' scheduled regular season finale against Philadelphia University has been canceled and will not be made up.
