Dugan and Frey power No. 9 Golden Bears to sweep over Bloomsburg

BLOOMSBURG, PA (April 17, 2010) - Mike Dugan and Jared Frey had offensive outbursts to help lead the No. 9 Kutztown University baseball team to a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division sweep over Bloomsburg, 7-3 and 9-3, on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Bears (13-5) are now one win behind idle West Chester (14-6) in the win column and one loss below. Currently in a virtual tie with West Chester, a sweep on Sunday can move KU into first. The sweep is the fifth straight conference victory and ninth in the last 10 PSAC East contests.

Dugan recorded seven hits (5-for-5 in game two), blasted two home runs and recorded six RBIs. Frey was 3-for-4 in each of the contests and was a triple short of the cycle in the first game. Sophomore Shayne Houck, three time reigning PSAC East Player of the Week, smacked his 13th homer of the season in the final game to become the all-time single season leader at KU.

In the opener, the Golden Bears scored in each of the first five innings to pull away from the Huskies. Frey homered in the first inning, Brad Stoudt led off with a round tripper in the second and Dugan delivered a three-run home run in third.

The Golden Bear offense was more than enough when paired with the strong pitching effort from starter Jonathan Grosse. Grosse threw the first six innings, allowing three runs - two earned - and struck out three. Jordan Garcia pitched the final inning, giving up just one hit and striking one out.

Frey, Dugan, Houck and Brett Wigder combined to go 15-for-17 in the nightcap, with eight runs, seven RBIs and two home runs.

Houck hit his record setting homer in the first inning and entered the fifth tied at one-apiece before pulling away with three runs. In the sixth, the Golden Bears busted out with six runs after hitting for the cycle to start the inning.

Mike Kacelowicz singled, Frey tripled, Houck doubled and Dugan hit his second homer of the day. Gilbert Vega capped off the scoring with a two-run double.

Tyler Persun fired a gem to pick up the win on the mound with six solid innings. Persun allowed one earned run and struck out a season-high seven hitters.

The Golden Bears will host a doubleheader with Bloomsburg on Sunday, a make-up from Friday's postponement beginning at 1 p.m. on North Campus Field.
