Golden Bears get back on winning track at Chestnut Hill

NORTH WALES, PA (March 21, 2010) - Tom Neely was brilliant in his first start of the season, while Jared Frey, Brett Wigder and Corey Buletza paced the offense to help the Kutztown University baseball team defeat Chestnut Hill 14-5 on Sunday afternoon's nonconference contest. (Boxscore)

Neely threw five innings of scoreless, one-hit ball to earn his first win of the season, while striking out two. He retired the first 11 batters faced, until a Dan Etherton double to right center ruined his no-hit bid. After a balk moved the runner up, Neely collected himself and left the runner stranded by forcing a groundout to James Quigley at third.

The Golden Bears (12-5) offense came to life after a weekend of silence against Shippensburg. KU had nine different players tally a hit as they pounded out 13 total. The fireworks started early, as the Golden Bears had three cross the plate in each of the first two innings and a pair in third to build an 8-0 lead.

In the opening frame, the Golden Bears offense used a two-out rally to score all of their runs. After two quick outs, Shayne Houck and Quigley each singled and Mike Dugan drew a walk. Frey plated all three with a double to right field.

In the second inning, Buletza had an RBI single and eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly to center by Gilbert Vega.

Wigder had a two-out RBI in the third to record his first of three hits. Buletza, who also collected three hits, added an RBI in the third and fifth.

Matt Kulbacki and Cody Montz each wore a pitch to start off the eighth inning, with Kulbacki eventually scoring on an error by the third baseman. Jeff Kistle, who reached on the error, swiped second base and created the oppurtunity for Montz to steal home.

Damien Ruiz pitched a scoreless seventh with two strikeouts, while Brandon Shurr allowed one run and three hits over the final two frames.

The Golden Bears will return to action with a doubleheader at East Stroudsburg beginning at 1 p.m. The conference contest is a makeup from the March 12 postponement.
