BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Kutztown University men's tennis team bounced back from its first defeat of the season to post a 5-2 non-conference victory over Moravian on Wednesday afternoon.
The Golden Bears took early control with a sweep of doubles and claimed three of the first four singles points to secure the match in their favor.
Terrell Arejola (Quezon City, Philippines/Southville International School and Colleges) and
Luis Lopes (Piracicaba, Brazil/Colegio Saber) got things started for KU (8-1) with a 6-1 victory over Roman Farhad and Anthony Ronca at No. 2 doubles.
Dang Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam/) and
Henrique Rocha (Jaticua, Brazil/Escola SEB Maceio) followed with a 6-4 win at No. 1, while
Lucas Cherniak (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Escuela Superior de Comercio Carlos Pellegrini) and
Raphael Hoareau Lebon (Saint-Joseph, Réunion/) were triumphant by a matching score at No. 3.
Nguyen cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Wyatt Marshall at first singles and
Linus Vennekold (Laatzen, Germany/) topped Farhad 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 to push the Golden Bears' lead to 3-0. Nguyen and Vennekold share the team lead with seven singles wins apiece this season.
Moravian (7-4) got on the board with a 6-4, 6-2 win from Gavin Labbadia over
Joaquin Perez (Pachuca, Mexico/Escuela Americana) at No. 3, but Kutztown answered with Lopes 6-3, 6-2 straight set victory over Joey Kelly at No. 5 to secure the match result.
Rocha claimed KU's final point with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Ronny Pimentel Ferrer at No. 2.
In preparation for PSAC play beginning at the end of the month, Kutztown will have two more non-conference tuneups. The Bears host Marymount (Va.) next Wednesday, March 26, before taking on Salem (Va.) at the Keystone Courts on Friday, March 28.
