BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Sophomore sprinter
Kiana Young (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) had a historic day, breaking the school record in the 200m, as the Kutztown University track & field squad competed at the Coach Pollard Invitational hosted by Moravian University in Bethlehem on Saturday.
The East Stroudsburg native ran a blazing 25.05 in the 200m, good enough for third place, a PSAC qualifying mark, and the school record. She breaks Kelly Groth's previous record of 25.21 set at the Charlotte 49er Classic back in 2019. Young also set a time of 12.01 in the 100m, the second fastest in school history.
Young was not the only Golden Bear to enter the KU record book on Saturday. Freshman Brook Smith (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) ran 12.45 in the 100m, the ninth fastest in school history. Beth Schearer (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) tied her sixth-fastest time of 25.28 in the 200, while Raechel Bonner (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) ran the eighth-fastest time in program history in the same event. In the long jump, Delaney Beard (Sinking Spring, Pa./Governor Mifflin) set the fifth-best mark while Kacie Sienko (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) tied the sixth-best jump in program history. All earned a PSAC mark.
Along with those five, Taniyah Lawler (Chester, Pa./Chester), Myah Davies (New Market, Md./Linganore), and Taylor Funk (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) earned PSAC marks in their respective events.
The Golden Bears are in action at the famous Penn Relays next weekend in Philadelphia. Events will take place from Thursday, April 25 to Saturday, April 27.
