Holland claims pole vault silver, Golden Bears move up to fourth at PSAC Outdoor Championships

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore Natalie Holland (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) delivered the first medal-winning performance of her career, Friday, capturing silver in the pole vault to lead the Kutztown University women's track & field team on the second day of the PSAC Outdoor Championships at Shippensburg University.

Holland, who finished 11th at last year's conference outdoor meet, made a huge jump in year two and came within an attempt of sharing the PSAC title. The Lancaster, Pa., native tied Aina Galan with the top clearance of 3.75m (12-3.5), but Galan took gold by virtue of getting over the bar on her first attempt to Holland's second.

Still, Holland collected eight points towards Kutztown's team score and moved up to fourth on the program's top 10 list (from fifth) while setting a PR and securing All-PSAC Second Team honors.

The Golden Bears, who had four student-athletes in the event, also got points from Taylor Funk (Denver, Pa./Cocalico). Funk tied for fifth by clearing 3.55m (11-7.75).

Kutztown boasted another pair of point-scorers and top five finishers in the 3000m steeplechase, where Jensen Kraft (Nutley, N.J./Saint Mary) took fourth and Faith Belote (Easton, Pa./Easton) fifth. Kraft's time of 11:33.60 is the seventh-fastest in school history, while Belote joined the top 10 in ninth with an 11:34.55.

Maria Clark (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) placed sixth in the discus throw with a best effort of 40.70m (133-6).

In preliminary heats on the track, Mackey Donovan (Blauvelt, N.Y./Tappan Zee) clocked in with the fifth-best time in the 800m (2:17.57) to qualify for Saturday's final. Beth Schearer (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) advanced to the final in the 200m with the sixth-fastest time (25.02).

The Maroon and Gold also put its 4x100m relay team of Andrea Danciu (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin), Schearer, Maggie Coleman (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) and Brook Smith (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) through to the final with a 48.39 that ranked sixth among 15 teams.

Slippery Rock sits atop the team standings with 59.5 points. Millersville (38), East Stroudsburg (28), Kutztown (26.5) and California (25) make up the rest of the top five.

The PSAC Outdoor Championships conclude Saturday with events beginning at 11 a.m.
