SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -- Taniyah Lawler (Chester, Pa./Chester) won the 400-meter hurdles and had a hand in two program top 10 times, while
Jaelyn D'Amelio (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) captured the 10,000-meter run to lead the Kutztown University women's track & field team at Saturday's Paul Kaiser Classic hosted by Shippensburg University.
Lawler eclipsed a PSAC qualifying standard and ran the seventh fastest 400m hurdles time in program history with a personal record 1:02.86 to top 30 competitors. She also ran the second leg of the Golden Bears' 4x100m relay, which finished runner-up with the fourth-best time in KU history, a 48.01. Lawler was joined by
Kira Solt (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough),
Raechel Bonner (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) and anchor
Brianna Foster (Ridley Park, Pa./Ridley Park).
It was a strong day on the track for the Maroon and Gold overall with two event wins, 10 PSAC qualifying times, three program top 10 times and 14 personal records.
Foster also worked her way into Kutztown's top 10 in the 100m with a PR of 12.45 in preliminaries. It was good for the fourth best time of 56 sprinters in prelims and seventh fastest in program history.
D'Amelio emerged from a group of 18 entries to win the 10,000m by just over 11 seconds with a PSAC qualifying time of 39:57.82.
A trio of Golden Bears accounted for runner-up finishes on the track.
Colleen Gilbert (Willow Street, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) surpassed the PSAC qualifying time and established a new PR to place second of 40 in the 1500m with a 4:49.29.
Sophia Knerr (Columbia, N.J./North Warren Regional) ran 18:51.94, second best of 25 runners in the 5000m.
Lynne O'Connor (Southampton, Pa./William Tennent) finished second in the signature 3000m steeplechase with a PSAC time of 12:00.41.
Bonner claimed third in the 400m with a PSAC time of 58.23, while
Ava Bendetti (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland) was fourth in a packed 58-entry 800m with a PSAC time and PR of 2:20.05.
Julianna Elsesser (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) secured fourth in the 3000m steeplechase with a PR of 12:42.96 and
Jaidah Mitchell (Pemberton, N.J./Pemberton Township) put forth a top five in the 4000m hurdles with a PSAC and PR time of 1:06.95.
Kutztown also featured a pair of second-place finishers in the field events, led by freshman
Gabby Payne (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) in the long jump. Payne was one of two KU student-athletes to join the top 10 in the event, with a best jump of 5.60m (18'4.5") to rank fourth in program history. Fellow first-year Golden Bear
Kacie Sienko (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) was in close pursuit, finishing fifth with a jump of 5.44m (17'10.25") to rank 10th all-time at KU.
Ally Tama (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) took second of 33 vaulters by clearing 3.68m (12'0.75"). Teammate
Kathleen Silverman (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) tied for fifth at 3.38m (11'1"), exceeding the PSAC qualifying standard.
In total, eight PRs were set in field events by KU on Saturday.
Molly Kutz (Pen Argyl, Pa./Pen Argyl) accounted for career best marks in two events, the hammer (33.08m/108'6") and javelin (26.47m/86'10").
Kutztown doesn't currently have another meet scheduled before the 2022 PSAC Outdoor Championships, May 12-14, at Millersville University, but could opt to add a last chance meet or two over the next week, giving student-athletes another opportunity to set conference or national marks.
