PHILADELPHIA -- Kutztown University's 4x200-meter relay team of
Raechel Bonner (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin),
Taniyah Lawler (Chester, Pa./Chester),
Kira Solt (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) and
Brianna Foster (Ridley Park, Pa./Ridley Park) broke a 19-year old school record with their time of 1:42.66 Friday afternoon during the 126th Penn Relays presented by Toyota at Franklin Field.
The previous record, a 1:43.40 set by Jaci Pfeiffer, Sara Otis, Jen Baney and Latisha Johnson back in 2003, fell by just under three quarters of a second. The 4x200m is not a commonly contested event for the Maroon and Gold --they've competed in it exclusively at the Penn Relays.
Friday's performance by Bonner, Lawler, Solt and Foster was sixth-fastest among 13 teams and second best among Division II schools behind only fifth-place Central State (1:42.51). The Golden Bears also topped DI Saint Joseph's (seventh) in the event.
Lawler and Bonner were back in action later Friday evening, bookending KU's 4x400m relay team, which also consisted of
Angela Iaccarino (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) and
Jaidah Mitchell (Pemberton, N.J./Pemberton Township). The quartet turned in the sixth-fastest time of 19 teams with a season-best 3:57.48.
The Golden Bears' lone competitor in field events was
Ally Tama (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) in the pole vault. The senior and school record holder, who ranks tied for 27th in Division II this season, cleared 3.63m (11'10.75").
Kutztown will be well-represented Saturday at the Paul Kaiser Classic hosted by Shippensburg. Events get underway at 9 a.m.
