KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- The Kutztown University women's golf team got an 85 from
Cecelia Knecht (North Charleston, S.C./Fort Dorchester), a career-best 88 from
Kayla McMahon (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) and an 89 from
Grace Babinchak (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton) to move up to sixth-place in the final standings of the 2022 PSAC Championship, Sunday, at Berkleigh Golf Club.
"I'm extremely proud of the team," head coach
Robert Fisher said. "We improved each round and truly had a total team effort this weekend, with contribution from all five ladies."
Knecht was the Golden Bears' leading scorer in every round, finishing with a three-day, 54-hole total of 39-over par 255 (87-83-85) to tie for 14th in the 50-player field. She equaled her Saturday round with two birdies and added five pars in a final round 85 (+13) on the par 72, 5,856-yard course.
McMahon jumped two spots on the leaderboard with her best collegiate round of 88 --a 14 shot improvement over her opening round score and 11 shots better than Saturday's second round.
Consistency was key for the junior from Sayreville, N.J., in the final round. She recorded a team-high seven pars and never shot worse than double bogey on any hole. For the tournament, McMahon shot 73-over 289 (102-99-88) to place 39th.
Babinchak made the biggest positional jump of any KU player, going from 34th at the start of the day into a tie for 30th with a 17-over 89. She had four pars and, like McMahon, did well to limit damage throughout her round with 11 bogeys and two doubles. The Hazleton native had a three day total of 278 (+62) with rounds of 97, 92 and 89.
Olivia Donnini (Wapwallopen, Pa./Crestwood) was the second-highest finishing player for the Maroon and Gold in 27th with a three-day score of 271 (+55) after matching 91s Saturday and Sunday (89-91-91). Her final round included five pars.
Freshman
Alivia Miesowitz (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton) had a successful weekend, despite a tough finish with Sunday's 102. Over the first 36 holes, Miesowitz, of Hazleton, set new career-low rounds with a 95 Friday and 93 Saturday. She finished with a three-day total of 290 (+30) to tie for 40th.
"Everyone fought hard to help the team this weekend," Fisher added. "I'm encouraged about what we can do next year. Things look bright and we return our entire team."
Kutztown made gains throughout the weekend with a 368 team score Friday, 359 Saturday and 353 Sunday. The Golden Bears trailed Bloomsburg by eight shots, but were 24 better than the Huskies in the final round to leap them for sixth in the team standings at 1080 (+216).
Gannon won its third consecutive PSAC title going away with a three-day total of 953 (+89), 42 strokes ahead of Mercyhurst (995, +131). Cal U was third at 1011 (+147), Millersville fourth at 1028 (+164) and West Chester fifth at 1049 (+185).
The Golden Knights also accounted for four of the top six finishers in the individual standings, led by PSAC champion Sarah White, who rallied from sixth with a final round 77 (+5). White's 54-hole score of 22-over 238 (77-84-77) edged teammate Ditte Petersen (82-76-81=239) and Cal U's Rachel Wilson (78-78-83=239) by one shot.
