MOHNTON, Pa. -- Cecelia Knecht (North Charleston, S.C./Fort Dorchester) shot a team-low 88 (+16) to finish in a two-way for 10th, leading the Kutztown University women's golf team to a fifth-place showing at Tuesday's Alvernia Spring Invitational in its final tournament ahead of this weekend's PSAC Championship.
Conditions were tough throughout the afternoon with no players breaking par on LedgeRock Golf Club's par 72, 5,810-yard track. Alvernia teammates McKylie Boreman and Yupha Muzyka tied atop the leaderboard with 4-over 76s, with Boreman ultimately claiming medalist honors.
Knecht carded an 8-over 44 on both the front and back nines, concluding her round with a team-high eight pars. It was the ninth time in 11 events this year that the North Charleston, S.C., native has played the Golden Bears' low round.
Developing into a reliable No. 2 behind Knecht has been
Olivia Donnini (Wapwallopen, Pa./Crestwood) and she was that again, Tuesday. Donnini took 15th in the 38-player field, using six pars to get around the course in 93 (+21).
Grace Babinchak (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton) played her second-best round of the spring with a 26-over 98 to tie for 17th, while
Alivia Miesowitz (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton) came home in 116 (+44) to round out KU's scoring quartet.
Alexis Verdes (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Township) also competed for the Maroon and Gold, shooting 119 (+47).
York (Pa.) College, which placed three players in the top five and all four of its scoring players in the top 10, did just enough to hold off host Alvernia by five shots.
The Spartans, led by Jordan Keller's third-place 8-over 80, shot 332 (+44) as a team. Despite having Boreman (76) and Muzyka (76) tie for medalist honors and Katie Lapinsky (81) in fourth, Alvernia's final scorer was well off the pace with a 104, allowing York to take the team victory.
Drew was third at 357 (+69), with Bloomsburg fourth at 386 (+98) and the Golden Bears fifth at 395 (+107). Lebanon Valley (424, +136) and Stockton (456, +168) competed the field.
Kutztown will be just steps from campus for this weekend's PSAC Championship, Friday through Sunday, at Berkleigh Golf Club. Opening round action begins Friday at 10 a.m.
