MIDDLETOWN, Pa. -- Kutztown women's tennis snapped a three-match slide with an assertive 8-1 non-conference victory at NCAA Division III Penn State Harrisburg Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Bears won 2-of-3 doubles matches and proceeded to sweep all six singles flights for their third win of the season.
Sarah Lazarchak (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) and
Jessika Klo (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) got KU (3-10) started with an 8-0 shutout victory over Annalisa Petrascu and Cassandra Ginder at third doubles.
Claudia Makarski (Garfield, N.J./Paramus Catholic) and
Catherine Maher (Shillington, Pa./Berks Catholic) followed with an 8-3 win over Sydney Nye and Breanna DeSantis at No. 1, before the Nittany Lions (6-6) salvaged their only point of the match with an 8-5 win at No. 3.
Kutztown continued to roll in singles, claiming five of the six flights in straight sets. In four of those wins, the Bears surrendered four games or less to their opponents.
Lazarchak earned the Maroon and Gold's first win of singles, topping Sarah Shaub 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4. Makarski defeated Nye 6-2, 7-5 at No. 1 and Maher, Kutztown's lone senior, won 6-1, 6-3 over DeSantis at No. 2.
Jess Marks (Allentown, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) battled back from a first set loss to sweep the second and down Isabella Pizzelanti in a super tiebreaker 4-6, 6-0, 11-9 at No. 3.
Brianna Wendling (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) and Klo put the finishing touches on the victory, with Wendling a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Petrascu at No. 5 and Klo having her way with Ginder 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6.
Kutztown travels to Lock Haven Tuesday for its final road and PSAC East match of the season. First serve is set for 4 p.m.
