Knecht ties for third at Kutztown Spring Invitational

FLEETWOOD, Pa. -- Junior Cecelia Knecht (North Charleston, S.C./Fort Dorchester) finished three shots off the win in a three-way tie for third with a round of 84 as the Golden Bear women's golf team hosted the Kutztown Spring Invitational at Moselem Springs Golf Club Sunday afternoon.

A total of 28 golfers braved cold and blustery conditions with periods of rain and hail, but there were plenty of solid scores at the top of the leaderboard, with the top eight finishers shooting in the 80s.

Knecht was the best of Kutztown's entries with a 14-over par 84. The North Charleston, S.C., native put together an outstanding front nine that included birdies on the 361-yard, par 4 second and 330-yard par 4 ninth. Knecht also had three pars, making the turn at 3-over 38 on the par 70 course playing at 5,818 yards.

Though the back nine proved more difficult, Knecht still knocked in a pair of pars and shared third overall with Millersville's Taylor Hileman and Jefferson's Kinley Lingenfelter at 14-over 84.

Olivia Donnini (Wapwallopen, Pa./Crestwood) used three pars in a five-hole stretch between Nos. 2-6 to post an 8-over 43 on the front nine. She ended the day with a 92, giving her sole possession of 13th place.

Two more Golden Bears locked down top 20 finishes, as sophomore Grace Babinchak (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton) placed 18th (102, +32) and freshman Alivia Miesowitz (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton) tied for 19th (105, +35). Both players registered one par during their rounds.

Alexis Verdes (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Township) and Kayla McMahon (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) also competed for the Maroon and Gold, Sunday. Verdes produced a pair of pars on her way to a 110, while McMahon shot 111.

Grace Sanborn of Lafayette and Ammala Moua of Jefferson shared the top spot with 11-over 81s, but Sanborn was named tournament medalist by virtue of a card comparison tiebreaker. Sanborn's 41 on the back nine was two shots better than Moua's 43.

Only four PSAC schools entered full teams, while individuals from Albright, Jefferson, Lafayette and Shepherd also competed.

Millersville won the team title with a 348 (+68). Bloomsburg took second at 370 (+90) and Kutztown third with a 383 (+103). East Stroudsburg lost one of its four entries during play and was unable to record a team score.

Following a busy week in which it competed four times in seven days, Kutztown will take a break from competition before playing in the Alvernia Spring Invitational, Tuesday, April 19, at LedgeRock Golf Club in its final tune up before the PSAC Championships April 22-24.
