CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa. -- Kutztown swept doubles and won 5-of-6 singles flights to post a convincing 8-1 victory over host Scranton, Saturday, in a non-conference match played indoors at the Birchwood Tennis Club.
The Golden Bears put their stamp on the match early as
Justin Gincauskas (Mississauga, Ontario/Cawthra Park Secondary) and
Sebastian Arizpe (Puebla, Mexico/Colegio Humboldt de Puebla) took down Steven Prosperino and Sal Sullivan, 8-2, at second doubles. Kutztown (2-1) doubled its lead on an 8-5 win by its top pair of
Gonzalo Barcelo (San Pedro, Argentina/Nuestra Senora del Socorro) and
Neal Devkaran (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI Catholic) against the Royals' James Harrington and Patrick O'Mara.
Third doubles went to a tiebreaker, but KU prevailed with
Ethan Moyer (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser) and
Kurt Abell (Sinking Spring, Pa./Conrad Weiser) scratching out an 8-7 (1) win to put their team in the driver's seat.
With Gincauskas beating Jason Budrys 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 and Devkaran posting a 6-2, 6-3 victory over O'Mara at No. 2, Kutztown put the match's outcome to rest early in singles. The Maroon and Gold also got wins from Arizpe at No. 4, 6-4, 6-2, over John Sinclair, Moyer at No. 5, 4-6, 6-1, 10-7, over Prosperino and Abell at No. 6, 6-2, 6-0, against Ryan Wolford.
Kutztown will take a break from competition through Spring Break before making its spring home debut Wednesday, March 23, against Marywood.
