WEST CHESTER, Pa. -- Gonzalo Barcelo (San Pedro, Argentina/Nuestra Senora del Socorro) was a straight set winner for the Kutztown University men's tennis team, Saturday, but host West Chester snapped a four-match skid in the series between the two teams with a 6-1 victory in the PSAC opener for both teams.
Kutztown hadn't dropped a match on the Golden Rams' home courts since 2013, but West Chester got off to a fast start in this one and never looked back.
All three doubles matches were close, but each ended in favor of the Golden Rams (1-5, 1-0 PSAC). WCU secured the doubles point with 6-3 wins at flights one and two, eventually completing the sweep, 7-5, at No. 3 despite the best efforts of Kutztown's
Ethan Moyer (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser) and
Kurt Abell (Sinking Spring, Pa./Conrad Weiser).
No. 5 Cesar DeJesus-Morales, No. 3 Chris Succi and No. 2 Felix Weber won their singles matches in straight sets to lock up the win for West Chester.
The Golden Bears (2-2, 0-1 PSAC) avoided the shutout late when Barcelo held off Andre Zequeira at first singles, 6-4, 6-4, for his first win of the season.
Kutztown will try to even its PSAC ledger next Saturday when it travels to Millersville for a 1 p.m. start.
