KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- No. 11 Kutztown wrestling honored its seniors by rolling to a 34-6 PSAC dual win over East Stroudsburg Wendesday night at Keystone Arena.
With the victory, the Golden Bears finished the season with a 10-2 dual record (5-2 PSAC) --the program's 14th double-digit win season in its last 15 campaigns.
Matt Wilde (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown), one of the five seniors recognized pre-match, continued his career-best year with a dominant 24-9 technical fall over Josh Jasionowicz, as KU jumped out in front 5-0 after the 125-pound bout. A flurry of takedowns highlighted Wilde's 19th win of the season. He racked up a season-high 11 against Jasionowicz. The Boyertown native leads the team with 50 takedowns this year.
Kutztown was without nationally-ranked
Collin Wickramaratna (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) at 133, but redshirt sophomore
Michael Torres (Allentown, Pa./Liberty) took advantage of his opportunity to step into the dual lineup, fending off Kelvin Rodriguez-Molina 9-5 behind a big third period. Rodriguez-Molina led 3-2 after the second, but Torres got a reversal and four back points in the final minute to tilt the result in his favor.
KJ Fenstermacher (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) extended the Bears' lead to 12-0 at 141, where he returned to the win column with a 10-2 major decision over Zach Lewis. A four-point nearfall in the second increased Fenstermacher's lead to 6-0 and he tacked on an escape, takedown and riding time point to close out the win.
ESU (2-9, 1-6 PSAC) earned decisions from Bryce Parenti (149) and Luke Ciampa (165), but those points were neutralized by decisions from Kutztown's
Kibwe McNair (Lansdale, Pa./Methacton) at 157 (6-2 over Jack Spahn) and
Ethan Baney (Hanover, Pa./South Western) at 174 (10-5 over Sczar Charles).
The only pin of the night came at 184, where
Matthew Weinberg (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan), already leading Josh Leidig 4-1, hit a reversal off the bottom to start the second and got the fall over Leidig at the 3:43 mark.
Graduate student
Brian Kennerly (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) collected KU's second major decision of the night, 16-4, over Ajay Hiller in the 197-pound bout. Kennerly took control early with eight points in the first period and finished just as strong with eight more in the third.
Though he much rather would have earned a victory in his home finale on the mat, top-ranked
Andrew Dunn Jr. (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic), got a proper salute and send off from the Keystone Arena crowd when he won his 63rd match (63-2) as a Golden Bear via forfeit.
Prior to the match, coach Rob Fisher, his staff and the Golden Bear wrestlers honored Cusick, Dunn Jr., Kennerly,
Pierson White (Northumberland, Pa./Shikellamy) and Wilde for their contributions to the program.
With duals in the rear view mirror, Kutztown will ramp up its training in hopes of bringing home some postseason hardware. The first order of business is the Super Region 1 Championships, which will be held Saturday, Feb. 26, at Pitt-Johnstown.
